Deadpool Getting New Writers for Its Marvel Studios Debut

Deadpool 3' in the Works at Disney as Ryan Reynolds Taps Writers | IndieWire

Bringing in new writers for Deadpool is both a good and bad idea.

As much as everyone has been waiting for the X-Men to join Marvel Studios, there’s another character that’s been just as anticipated. It’s the Merc with the Mouth, the Regenerate Degenerate, Deadpool. Deadpool was one of the only 20th Century Fox franchises that was met with mostly positive responses. It helps that Ryan Reynolds is the best interpretation of a comic book since Robert Downey Jr.’s Tony Stark. The biggest concern with Deadpool joining the MCU was the rating.

Deadpool has to be rated R in order for it to be a success. We saw this case for Wolverine. X-Men Origins: Wolverine and The Wolverine weren’t the Wolverine movies we deserved. Then, Logan came out and the simple R rating gave Wolverine a classic film. If Deadpool goes PG-13, it’ll upset the fans and possibly ruin the franchise. With all that said, this writer has faith. Not just because Marvel Studios has been aces thus far. It’s because the Emmy award-winning Bob’s Burgers’ writers Wendy Molyneux and Lizzie Molyneux-Loeglin will be writing the next Deadpool project. While this could be great news, there are some things that worry this writer.

NYCC Interview: The Cast And Crew Of Bob's Burgers | The Mary Sue

Good idea

You may be thinking, “The Bob’s Burgers’ writers?! How is this a good thing?” First, Bob’s Burgers has been a successful and iconic pop culture program since 2011. And we all know Fox is good for canceling shows. Its popularity has had people dressing up as the family at conventions and Halloween. Second, the characters are beloved. Tina’s twerk and Louise Belcher’s evil laugh gifs are frequently used among text message threads. Linda’s songs are hummed and sung throughout the country. And Bob, well, he’s Bob. The loveable and miserable burger chef. Wendy Molyneux and Lizzie Molyneux-Loeglin know how to make people laugh and keep them interested in a product.

Bad, Deadpool

Now, here comes the bad part. The first thing this writer thought about was consistency. Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick wrote the past two Deadpool projects. How will the cast react to new writers? Will Wendy Molyneux and Lizzie Molyneux-Loeglin be able to continue the flow of the previous two films? Secondly, can they write Deadpool? That’s the most important part. Can they create the same kind of vibe that the previous writers did? It’s not just jokes. Deadpool is a deep character. Sure, they know funny. That’s a given. However, do they know Deadpool’s humor and his character? That has yet to be seen.

If we’re being honest, there would have been criticism no matter who Marvel Studios would have used. Disney could have brought on the previous writers and someone may have said that Deadpool needed a new look set of eyes. Maybe Wendy Molyneux and Lizzie Molyneux-Loeglin are the better look. For all we know, their idea for Deadpool 3 could be a masterpiece. The smart thing to do would be to wait and see what happens. Besides, Ryan Reynolds won’t let a bad Deadpool be released.
