S.W.O.R.D. issue No. 7 has connected the ending of the Marvel Comics crossover Empyre.
The ending of Marvel Comics’ crossover Empyre came with an extreme warning from Agent Abigail Brand. Brand started off by slapping Captain Marvel for holding information from her and Alpha Flight. Info that caused the deaths of tons of beings on Earth and other planets. She left telling Emperor Hulking that Alpha Flight can’t work if it’s an afterthought and that she quit. The final pages show Hulkling bloodied and beaten. Then, through a portal comes Brand saying that she warned him and that Alpha Flight didn’t work and that she was creating something better.
In S.W.O.R.D. No. 7, we see the fight between the protectors of space against Dormammu and his mindless ones. Hulkling’s forces were being overwhelmed. Just like the end of Empyre: Aftermath Avengers, Hulking was on his back bleeding and defeated. It’s then that we see Abigail Brand coming through a portal with Krakoan mutants from S.W.O.R.D. ready to save the day.
How this affects Marvel Comics
Abigail Brand wasn’t kidding. That improvement she was talking about is the new S.W.O.R.D. (Sentient World Observation and Response Directorate). The space station and operations are still run by Abigail Brand. The difference now is that it’s powered and maintained by mutants. While S.W.O.R.D. is still in its infancy, it has a lot of potential. So far, S.W.O.R.D. already developed a way to make planet Arrako (formerly Mars) the capital of the Sol System.
As Nova said in S.W.O.R.D. No. 6, Abigail Brand doesn’t do things for charity. The same thing applies here. She saved Hulkling for selfish means. Brand says to consider this an ice breaker between the Alliance and Krakoa. A smart move. Anything to help with diplomacy between Krakoa and other planets is something the mutants of Krakoa can use.
